One of the City’s Most Historic Blocks Dayton Street in Cincinnati’s West End is one of the most architecturally significant streets in Ohio. The block is lined with Italianate and Second Empire Victorian homes built primarily between 1850 and 1890 many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At its peak, Dayton Street was home to some of Cincinnati’s most prominent families, and the bones of that era are still visible in every cornice, bay window, and original facade that survived. Like many urban neighborhoods, Dayton Street fell into serious decline through the mid-20th century. But it never lost its bones. Preservation efforts over the past few decades have brought a number of these homes back to life and today the street sits at an interesting intersection of history and urban revival. For buyers willing to do their homework, historic properties like these can offer something new construction simply can’t craftsmanship, character, and a story. They also come with unique considerations around historic tax credits, renovation financing, and preservation requirements that are worth understanding before you buy.
